Quelle1: As we all by now know, the Half-Life 2 source code and code to related mods was released to the public by a hacker. The source was obtained illegally (stolen) and then illegally distributed via channels like IRC, HTTP, Bittorrent et al. Despite how some people seem to think, this source is NOT LEGAL to download or distribute and to do so violates US copyright law. No matter what your intentions, honorable or dishonest, Valve has not given you permission to download that code in any way shape or form. Without their permission, doing anything with that code is illegal. Furthermore, Valve has pleaded for the community to help them track down the perpetrators. They didn't ask for people to go around cursing their name and downloading THEIR code. The Half-Life community is one of the most backwards I have ever seen. More often then not people bitch and moan at Valve, basically calling chidren smarter than Valve's developers. Despite the fact some people seem to think Valve owes them something, Valve did happen to deliver into our hands the single most popular on-line multiplayer game ever. And I think its fair that criticism of their internal security lapses, remain internal as we do not have any positive details on how it all went down. Gabe's description looked more like speculation of the flaw that allowed it to happen than a specific bug. Ungrateful, snobby, little dipshits who think its ok to launch DDOS attacks and source theft against any company are criminals THAT ALL USERS should want to see caught. They perpetrated a crime against Valve that affects us all, they did no favors. It's the actions of these individuals which make Steam authentication longer, cause it to go down, and just generally slow down the development of the software the rest of us love and support. Now is a time to support Valve, respect their rights, and do whatever we can to help. Most people do, but many do not, and they are the people this is addressed to. Quelle2: Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code. Here is what we know: 1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule. 2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled. 3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account. 4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree. 5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools). 6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent. Well, this sucks. What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great. We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.
