This Barton is locked. The forum you may have found something about it, possibly it is maintained by Overclockers.com.
Nearly every Barton build since 0339 (read year 03, week 39) is locked with only very rare exceptions. The only CPUs unlocked for now are the 64 and 64FX. But these CPUs are clocked quite highly by AMD itself, so there is not much headroom to go for. And after the transition to 90nm in 2004 we may see locked 64s as well.
i read an article on some site, i forget which, about the new barton protection with the clear layer over top...looking at mine yesterday it appeared that it, too, had this clear layer...

That sounds very optimistic to me. And hearing something like that from your side really adds significance to it. Do you have any ideas how AMD invoked this protection?

Please post the manufacturer week and a more detailed description of your CPU.
I've already ordered a locked CPU (wasn't easy to find a locked one - nobody want this but I had to search for it ) and hope to find a solution for the new overclocking protection very soon.

This is the typical behaviour for a locked barton. You can do whatever you want, the CPU just resist to accept anything else than the multiplier set at the factory. There is no way known to the community to circumvent this protection. Perhaps this will change in the future, but today we have to accept it.

Ive just done the pin mod with the socket view on my barton 2500+ using an epox 8k9ai. it appears to have worked because the multipliers in the bios are now availible and don't reset when rebooting. However, i tried setting my chip at 12x166 and it reboots as 11x166. I look at my bios and it has not changed still says 12x166. I know that by doing the mod i have made a change because before when i would try a different multiplier and would go into the bios and it would be set back to 11. now, it seems like my bios is saving the setting but not using it.
